DETROIT LABORFEST 2004
SEPTEMBER 12, 2004

Held at Detroit's Ford Field, the second annual Detroit LaborFest attracted tens of thousands of union members and supporters from every imaginable trade in Michigan.

The free event featured on-field games and events for children, and area marching bands. Keynote remarks were given by Michigan's Governor Jennifer Granholm, and Democratic Presidential running-mate John Edwards, as well as noted union officials and dignitaries. Throughout the day, the event stage on the main concourse featured music by local union-supportive bands. With help from our brothers and sisters in IATSE Locals 812 & 600, the entertainment and speeches were televised throughout the stadium and concourses.

The Good & Welfare committee of Local 38 created and staffed our own exhibit at this year's event, in a successful effort to "spread the word" of who we are and what we do.

Our booth was themed on a theatre marquee look, built with powder-coated display truss and custom scenic panels and graphics. Central to the display, a large video monitor played a looped presentation about the IATSE and our crafts, with videotapes furnished by our International in New York. We distributed thousands of copies of our
newly-printed Local 38 informational brochure.

Our employment partners at the Michigan Opera Theatre, Nederlander Detroit Theatrical, and the Fisher Theatre also gave generous support. With their help, we held free hourly raffles for tickets to upcoming performances at the Detroit Opera House and the Fisher Theatre. At each drawing, 2nd and 3rd place prizes included collectible Broadway show posters. The hourly drawings brought hundreds of excited people to our booth during the day.

Overall, we heightened awareness of our union throughout the labor and political community. Our members spoke with Governor Granholm and UAW President Ron Gettelfinger, and got copies of our brochure into their hands. We also had a couple of visitors interested in organizing their workplaces with our assistance.
